New SSE Service: ASPS Soil Moisture Product selection and download

The first global soil moisture product derived from the Active Microwave Instrument (AMI) on-board of the European Remote Sensing satellite 1 and 2 (ERS-1 / 2) was released in 2002. Ten years later and despite the deorbiting of ERS-1 / 2 in 2000 and 2011 respectively, the Institute of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (I.P.F) have produced a new high resolution soil moisture product based on ESAs recently released, improved, ERS-2 AMI scatterometer data. The high resolution product, produced via ESAs Grid Processing On Demand service (G-POD), takes full advantage of ESAs Advanced Scatterometer Processing System (ASPS) which has provided ERS-2 AMI scatterometer data with an improved radiometric quality and improved spatial resolution (25 km). The new set of soil moisture estimates are computed globally over the periods from May 1997 to February 2003 and from July 2003 to April 2004. The data are freely available, after registration, via ESAs Service Support Environment (SSE) Earth Observation portal.

New SSE Service: Broadcasting Africa

Thanks to the new SSE Service "Broadcasting Africa", authorized Cat-1 users (considered as Data providers) will be able to disseminate EO products to their end-users based in Africa.

Cat-1 users are entitled to use the service and can contact the Earth Observation HelpDesk ( eohelp@esa.int ) to further check their technical requirements (data size and type).

The service relies on the ESA satellite-based Data Dissemination System (DDS) which is based on three uplink stations located at Kiruna (Sweden) and ESRIN (Italy), plus a growing park of more than 50 operational receiving stations spread over Africa but also Europe and South America.

Non Cat-1 users (still contacting eohelp@esa.int ) will be requested first to submit a Cat-1 proposal to EOPI, to eventually become eligible for using the service.

ESA EOLi catalogue temporarily unavailable to SSE Services

New MGVI collections available

The MGVI Catalogue Service available on SSE has been enhanced by adding new collections over new areas of interest.

In addition to the collections already available over Europe, Horn of Africa and Ontario, systematically updated every 10 days, the service now includes the following areas of interest as well:

Galapagos
Mexico
Northern Africa
Southern Africa
Southern America

The MERIS Global Vegetation Index (MGVI) is a good measure of the amount and vigour of vegetation at the surface, and it is a MERIS Level 2 product, which is free of charge.

The MGVI level-3 aggregation processor, developed and maintained by the EC Joint Research Centre (JRC) is routinely operated by the ESA Grid Processing on Demand (G-POD) system.

You can request MGVI processing over other areas of interest by contacting the SSE Team.

Following increased request of past ASAR products - far beyond their availability at the rolling archives, ESA is making available the ASAR data accumulated over years at our Grid stores.

The ASAR Product selection & download service provides a Catalogue for selection and download of ASAR products to all CAT-1 Users.

The selection of products requires spatial and temporal coverage definition. Products can be directly downloaded via ftp. It is possible to download ASAR products belonging to the following datasets:

For example:

The service interfaces with the Grid storage system to provide access to all the ASAR datasets; these products have been systematically copied from the ESA Rolling Archives and available since years.
Since these products are taken from the ESA RAs, Start Date, Stop Date and availability of the products refers to the systematic process at the ENVISAT receiving stations, which may differ from the ones exposed by the ESA EOLI catalogue at the present.

Data is available from June 2005 to today, but some samples are present also for dates prior to June 2005. Data is available in the ENVISAT N1 format.

Newly acquired products are made available with a delay varying from 2 hour to 1 day.

New RSS Portal now available online!

The new Research and Service Support Portal is now available online. Besides an overall introduction to the RSS service, the Portal provides detailed information on and access to several EO data users oriented environments and resources, such as Grid Processing on Demand, Knowledge-centred Earth Observation, Multi-Sensor Evolution Analysis, Reference Data Set, and Service Support Environment.

Moreover, the new Portal provides information on RSS Technology Projects and is a gateway to the RSS e-collaboration environment, called "Join and Share", where RSS users, namely EO scientists and service providers, share information related to their research projects, applications or services via thematic Wikis and Forums.

MERIS RR Cloud-free services available for Cat-1 users

The MERIS RR Cloud-free services are added value services which allow Cat-1 users to retreive MERIS Level 1 Reduced Resolution products with a cloud cover under a treshold defined by them.

Two different types of services are now available on the SSE Portal:

The MERIS RR Cloud-free Product for Cat-1 Users service allows Cat-1 users to search and download MERIS Level 1 Reduced Resolution products which have been ingested in the Image Information Mining System (IIM-System) catalogue. The service allows users performing enhanced catalogue searches specifying : the Area of Interest (AOI), the Time of Interest (TOI) and a cloud coverage threshold over the AOI.
The MERIS RR Cloud-free Subscription Service actively informs users when MERIS Reduced Resolution products are available in the rolling archives with cloud coverage below the user defined threshold. The MERIS Cloud-free Subscription Service, for the subscription period (e.g.: 5 days) and at time intervals (e.g.: each 12 hours) specified by the caller, automatically provides automatically provides the link to download the MERIS Level 1 Reduced Resolution products transiting in the rolling archives within each time interval, touching the specified area of interest and having, within the area of interest, cloud coverage less than the specified threshold.

The services are currently available free-of-charge to authorised MERIS Category 1 users only (authorisation can be obtained by submitting a Category-1 proposal). User comments are encouraged and should be passed on to the Earth Observation Help Desk.

New services from Geo-K and Planetek are available on the SSE!

GEO-K (Italy) and Planetek (Italy) offer on the SSE platform new SAR technology for investigating on tectonics, with the following three services:

NEWTEC-SAR interferograms generation is designed to allow users not confident with SAR image processing to produce interferograms from ERS SAR and ENVISAT ASAR images. This service provides all the processing chain from images ingestion to interferogram generation. The output is produced in a raster format and can be used then as input to NEWTEC-Seismic event class from SAR interferograms service.

NEWTEC-Seismic event class from SAR interferograms is able to automatically produce the fault classification (normal, strike, reverse) and the characteristic parameters (length and width, dip and strike angle, bottom depth) associated to a seismic event starting from an input interferogram. The retrieval procedure is in real time and it is based on neural networks algorithms. The service is intended for expert users able to produce and supply to the service their own interferograms.

NEWTEC-Seismic event class from SAR images, based on NEWTEC-SAR interferograms generation and NEWTEC-Seismic event class from SAR interferograms chaining, delivers the seismic events characterization from SAR images.

New SSE Services by SOSI Consortium

These new services are part of the SOSI (Spatial Observation Services and Infrastructure) project's demonstration system. SOSI aims at the verification of SEIS concepts for infrastructure and services in the context of Land Cover Monitoring & Earth observation via the demonstration of distributed data and processing services. Data and services are shared at European and Member State levels.

3 different types of services are now available on the SSE Portal:

Access services to National Hungarian Environmental data sets

New SSE feature warning - timeout of default SSE asynchronous order calls now configurable

We are pleased to introduce a new SSE feature that allows Service Providers to change the lifetime of the asynchronous calls of a default BPEL instance in the case of the Default SSE ordering interface. Previously this value was hardcoded as 3 days, which was too short for some services that either require large processing times or manual/offline steps, possibly involving third-parties and slow communication channels.

New Service available on the SSE Portal - Snow Cover Map

Indra offers a new service with subscription to provide Snow Cover Maps in TIF format from MODIS images, with white pixels for snow areas and black pixels for the remaining zones.
Snow Cover Maps will be available two days after the acquisition date of the image (obtained from the NASA MODIS catalogue - Terra and Aqua satellites).
The service is available for every user-selected area of the world between 65N and 65S and supports past requests.

New Services available on the SSE Portal - Naval Traffic Statistics For Security

Naval Traffic Statistics for Security provides NTSS value added products for the blue borders of Europe, for a given area of interest and a given time interval. Furthermore, this time interval can be repeated through several past years. For example the user can request aggregated statistical data for every spring of the last four years. The result is a set of positions that describes the vessels' routes in a statistically relevant manner, which can then be further processed for example with GIS software on behalf of the customer.

The NTSS Basic user interface gives users the possibility to upload their images via FTP and proceed to the order of the service after the price calculation in consideration of the maximum number of images also uploaded via FTP. After the RFQ result has been accepted by the user Planetek Hellas EPE will provide the final statistic products via FTP.

The NTSS Chained service user interface takes as input parameters the time interval, the total number of images that the user wants to elaborate for that period, the minimum percentage of coverage with regards to the area of interest that the images must have and the user class. For more details about the user class please read the terms in the SLA document. After the RFQ result has been accepted by the user, Planetek Hellas EPE will provide the final statistic products and the images pertaining to the search to the user in DVD format via regular mail.

ESA provides a new service, the ESA layers.

The aims of the service are three:

provide an example of a service which uses many of the new WMS features of the WebMapViewer, the SSE OGC Web Services Client,
provide to all Service Providers interesting layers to integrate their own services: improving the service page look and feel, supporting their service results with additional layers and with the related metadata,
provide users GIS data useful for their research, analyses, works.

The following groups of layers are available:

Time Layers includes all the ESA layers computed periodically (try the animation tool)

Mediterranean sea surface Temperature (data available since the 2004-10-03, daily updated)
North West Europe Sea Surface Temperature(data available since the 2004-10-03, daily updated)

New Service available on the SSE Portal - MSG Product selection and download

The "MSG Product selection and download" service provides, to authorised ESA Cat-1 users, a new way for selection and download of MSG products.

The selection of products requires spatial and temporal coverage definition and channel (bands) picking for limiting the processing time and final product size. For each order process, it is possible to download a set of contiguous MSG timeslots for each of the specified channels.

MSG Product selection and download is also available to Service Providers as a chainable module, enabling the creation of value-added services.

SSE Portal unavailability during 12/13 September weekend

Please be advised that due to a major power intervention all hosts supporting the SSE environment will be shutdown on Saturday, September 12th. This includes the SSE Portals (Test and Operational), the databases, TOOLBOX and WMS/WFS/WCS servers, which will be unavailable for the duration of the intervention, expected to be at least 5 hours starting from the early morning.

Due to the complexity of such an operation, it is possible that some minor disruptions will occur in the following couple of days after all hosts have been restarted (Sunday 13th and Monday 14th).

SSE Portal problems in the last two days

As you may have noticed, the SSE Portal had serious problems in the last two days (Sunday, 23rd and Monday 24th August 2009). Although it was available throughout most of this period, its functioning was severely degraded. This was due to a major hardware problem in the supporting database server.

Our recovery procedures were applied during Monday afternoon and today, 25th August, the Portal is running over a backup database server, at full speed again.

Following our last two news items here and here, please be advised that the following services are now available:

MGVI vegetation product Over Europe via ftp (ESA)
MERIS RR Cloud-free Subscription Service (ESA)
MERIS RR Cloud-free Product for Cat-1 Users (ESA)
all user image and CAT-1 image services, including reconditioning and chain services (MEEO)

This means that all services involved in the maintenance activity started on 01/07/2009 are now available again.

Following the maintenance activity advertised yesterday here, please be advised that some services have remained unavailable during today, 02/07/2009, and will continue so while some further testing is performed.

Five new free of charge services from Service Provider MEEO

Five new services from Service Provider MEEO, based on the new version of the SOIL MAPPER® spectral classification system, are now available on the SSE Portal:

With respect to the previous release the new version improves the cloud detection capability and the inter-comparison among different sensors; moreover a new classification scheme compatible with the Corine Land Cover Classification system is available. The following data formats are supported:

SSE Service Providers can now benefit from the new version of the TOOLBOX which is available for download.

This version includes the Toolbox Runtime Environment 7.1 and the Toolbox Development Environment 1.2.0.

The Toolbox Runtime Environment 7.1 provides:

New web interface
New tags available for service development (script writing)
New monitoring centre features:

SSE stylesheet output rendering
Rendering of results on a map
Web interface access to service resources
Support for RSS feed

A new test center:

Support of the SSE stylesheet
New catalogue interface
New generic SOAP test tool

Java code execution, compiled at run-time
Native support for HMA ordering profile interface

The Toolbox Development Environment 1.2.0 provides:

An Eclipse plug-in used to manage completely the service development lifecycle
New script formatting facilities
Perspectives designed for develop and debug activities
Allows debug of a service deployed in a remote TOOLBOX RE
Extends debugging tools for:

Investigating the execution tree
Reading and modifying variables in the Toolbox Engine (basic types and XML types)
Suspension point highlighting on the script when a breakpoint is hit.

Encapsulates test files in a SOAP request if not provided.
Saves execution report in the workspace when a debug is performed

New SSL certificates on the SSE

As you may have noticed, recently the SSE started using new SSL certificates. In some cases, Web browsers may show SSE users and service providers alarming security warnings about this situation when they attempt to login.

We would like to inform that the thematic services that provide the MGVI (MERIS Global Vegetation Index) product over Europe have been improved.

This new version of the services includes:

New Data (Data are now available since May 2002)
New Service interface (Maps are available on WMS so animation can be performed through the SSE Web Map Client)
New Data Format (HDF bands are now optimized)

The services MGVI vegetation product over Europe via ftp and MGVI Over Europe Catalogue Search and Download are free of charge for SSE registered users.

New Cat-1 User Service available on the SSE Portal - MERIS RR Cloud-free Subscription Service -

The "MERIS RR Cloud-free Subscription Service" allows Category 1 users (read more..) to download MERIS Reduced Resolution products from rolling archives.
A mail will notify users when new products satisfying order request become available.

New Service available on the SSE Portal - MODIS level 1B data for Cat-1 users -

The "MODIS level 1B data for Cat-1 users" service is a Catalogue Search and download service of MODIS level 1B products, available free of charge to ESA Cat-1 users. By choosing spatial and temporal boundaries it is possible to accurately refine search results. You can also visualise product details, including a near true-color thumbnail, before proceeding with the download. Data are available in near real time.

MODIS level 1B catalogue search and download is also available to Service Providers as a chainable module, enabling the creation of value-added services. Try it now!

The "MGVI Over Europe Catalogue Search and Download" provides a catalogue service of all the MGVI computed over European surface.

The MERIS Global Vegetation Index (MGVI) is a good measure of the amount and vigour of vegetation at the surface, and it is a MERIS Level 2 product, which is free of charge.

The MGVI level-3 aggregation processor is routinely operated on ESA Grid Processing on Demand (G-POD) and is developed and maintained by the European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC).

The "MGVI vegetation product over Europe via ftp" is a Subscription Service which allows users to receive the MGVI (MERIS Global Vegetation Index) computed over Europe.

The MERIS Global Vegetation Index (MGVI) is a good measure of the amount and vigour of vegetation at the surface, and it is a MERIS Level 2 product, which is free of charge.

Two new services for SPOT images are available on the SSE Portal:

The "SPOT Image Reconditioning" allows the user manipulating a SPOT image by applying, in a single service through a check-box selection, Clipping and Format Conversion. It is accessible at this link.

The "SPOT Spectral pre-classification chain" service allows the user to manipulate a SPOT image by applying, in a single service through a check-box selection, Clipping, Calibration and Spectral Classification services and is accessible at this link.

Both services automatically apply also the Format Check, in order to avoid starting an elaboration on a corrupted input product.

Two new services for ESA Cat-1 user images are available on the SSE Portal:

The "Calibrated Cat-1 image" service applies a radiometric conversion and correction processing tool to convert image digital numbers into physical units such as TOA reflectance for visiblebands and brightness temperature for thermal infrared bands.
You can access it here.

The "Spectrally pre-classified Cat-1 Image" service uses the SOIL MAPPER® to automatically map each pixel of the input image onto a discrete set of (up to) 85 spectral categories. The output can be in GeoTIFF or ENVI format. The Service is available for Landsat TM/ETM+ data belonging to the ESA Landsat TM Database.

SPOT DALI maintenance on 26/07/2008

Two new services for user images pre-processing are available on the SSE Portal.
The "Calibration of user image" service converts image digital numbers into physical units such as reflectance for visible bands and brightness temperature for thermal infrared bands.

The SSE is happy to offer its Users and Service Providers a brand new version of the WebMapViewer. Besides improvements regarding Look&Feel, these are the main new features:
